What Is Keto?

by Anna Victoria in Recipes + Nutrition

Keto is a very popular new way of eating that has been around for much longer than we may realize. The term “Keto” is short for ketosis, which is a metabolic state where there is a buildup of ketone bodies in the bloodstream, and the brain uses these ketone bodies for fuel rather than glucose. Our bodies naturally go into ketosis as a back-up way of fueling itself during times of starvation or periods of very little to no carbohydrate intake.

The Keto diet was originally found to help children with epilepsy control the frequency of seizures by limiting the amount of carbohydrates and protein eaten. This involves focusing on fat in the diet as the primary macronutrient consumed. In more modern times, our keto diet has become more of a high fat and high protein way of eating, with very little carbs. This typically also lends itself to be an attractive way of eating to people looking to maintain muscle mass, as they are still consuming a higher amount of protein than the original keto diet, which consisted of about 80% of calories from fat daily or more!

There currently is not a lot of research that the keto diet is beneficial for normal, healthy individuals and for people looking to increase muscle mass. Some research is showing that a lower carbohydrate diet can be helpful for people with pre-existing conditions such as type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, etc. If you feel that you would like to try out a keto-style of eating, the Keto plan in the Fit Body app is a great place to start!
